After reading the verge article, I disagree that the failure of the 737 Max had to do with a desire for conformity. It seems to me it has a lot more to do with market pressures prioritizing bottom-line profitability over human need.

I'm guessing you're interpreting it as group think in the sense that somebody should have stood up and protested against rushing out a system that lacked proper redundancy. I feel like the coercive nature of a work environment combined with its top down structure makes it a completely different environment than a comparatively free social situation like Twitter.
